Empress Maria Theresia as penitent,
water colour and gouache on parchment, 11 x 8,5 cm, framed, glazed, probably painted by a member of the imperial family ca. 1760/70, (Lu)
It is known that Maria Theresia and her husband Franz Stephan as well as their children were schooled in the painting of miniatures, and that they created their own miniatures showing members of their family in a religious context. Their teacher was probably the court miniaturist Antonio Bencini who worked for the imperial court from the mid 1740s to the early 1780s. All likenesses of the imperial family were executed in water colours.
