Indonesia, Sumatra: a typical sword of the Karo-Batak, with a horn hilt in characteristic form.
A sword of the Karo-Batak from central Sumatra. With an elegant, narrow, single-edged blade. Its back is straight, the sheath is lightly curved tapering towards the hilt and recessed. The hilt bears a silver hilt ring and is made of water buffalo horn. At its upper end the hilt divides into two ‘twisted’ stumped tips, as is typical for the swords of the Karo-Batak. The bivalve sheath is made of dark wood and all around at the top has a stripe with fine, arched carvings (depictions of animals?). Both sheath compartments are held together by 8 silver clasps. Two small, round British silver coins with the head and inscription ‘Queen Victoria’ constitute the concluding ‘hold’ at the sheath’s lower end. They are held by a copper rivet. A beautiful, interesting object, with only minimal age-related damage (minor cracks at the upper end of the sheath). Otherwise no damage! Length: 72 cm (in total). First third of the 20th century.
