Indonesia, Java: an ornate dagger called 'kris', with a straight blade, carved hilt and painted sheath.

Indonesia, Java: an ornate dagger called 'kris', with a straight blade, carved hilt and painted sheath. - Tribal Art - Africa

An ornate kris from Java, with a blackened, straight, blade in pamor-technique. The hilt, made of precious wood, in typical Javanese form, is unusually elaborately carved: On top it shows a winged sea monster ‘Makara’ and, in relief, on the inner side, two demon faces. The ‘Mendak’ ring between the blade and hilt is made of brass and encrusted with pale gemstones. The sheath is of the curved, Javanese ‘Surakarta type' and the 'boat' of the sheath ('Wranka') is painted on both sides with colourful, in part gold-coloured, animal scenes. On the front, a stripe of this painting stands out from the lower part of the sheath, which is covered in black. A very carefully and ornately crafted object. No damage! Length: c. 50 cm (in total). First half to mid-20th century. (ME)
