Maasai, Kenya, Tanzania: a typical Maasai shield, dyed black and red.
A characteristic elongated oval shield of the Maasai, nilo-hamitic cattle breeders of the East African steppes (Kenya, Tanzania). The shield is made by stretching cowhide (with the help of leather strap) a wooden oval frame and a flat wooden central vertical strut (with a handle carved out from the same piece on the back). Dyed black-and-red on the front in typical Maasai fashion. An object with visibly good, old, and partly shiny usage patina, especially at the back of the handle. With leather hand protector and carrying straps. No significant damage. Height: 106 cm; width: c. 50 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)
