Mixed lot (2 items), Zulu, South Africa: two ceramic jugs for beer (one of them with a plaited lid), both hailing from South Africa. - Tribal Art - Africa

1: Spacious, voluminous and ‘pot-bellied’ jugs. Moulded from reddish clay, dyed black and brown, fired and polished to shine. It has a round, funnel-shaped neck and spout at the top (6 cm high) and a flat round surface as a bottom. The outer wall of the jug is decorated with four diametrically positioned etched plant motifs with impressed dots. Three of the plants have four leaves and one has five. A beautiful old jug for the keeping of beer made of millet showing only limited age-related damage at the spout (a broken piece that has been glued and 2 minimal losses to the upper rim). Otherwise no damage. Height: 32 cm; diameter: 37 cm (belly), 12.3 cm (spout).
2: A smaller, round beer jug without a defined spout and with a very small flat bottom. Moulded from reddish clay, dyed black, fired and polished to shine. The outer wall of the jug is decorated with two diametrically positioned motifs printed in knops in the shape of the letter ‘W’. This beer jug had a round lid made of tightly plaited light-brown glass blades. No significant damage. Height: 22 cm (without lid), 25 cm (with lid); diameter: 24 cm (belly), 13 cm (spout in the upper section). Both Zulu beer jugs: first half of the 20th century. (ME)
