Cameroon Grassfields: a large slit drum, carved from one piece of wood.
Hollowed and in the form of a cut tree trunk, it bears a large carved buffalo head on each end. The drum was struck with wooden drumsticks on the thin ‘tongues’ in the middle. These large slit drums served as a means of communication (‘talking drums’). Their 6 to 7 different tones could reach up to 20 km away. An impressive, very old piece from the possession of the 'Fon' (chief, sultan) of Bandjoun. It has a good patina with some age-related cracks. Length: 220 cm; diameter: 41 cm. First third of the 20th century. (ME)
