Idoma, Nigeria: a typical Idoma mask with two upwardly curving, right-angled horns.

Idoma, Nigeria: a typical Idoma mask with two upwardly curving, right-angled horns. - Tribal Art - Africa

The Idoma tribes, in southwestern Nigeria, have a diverse artistic output, with figures, dance crests and masks. The present Idoma mask displays an oval face with a pointed chin and vertical rows of characteristic scarification marks on both temples. This is just as typical for Idoma masks as the white and black colouring (the original white has darkened to yellow due to age), the small, protruding mouth with inserted wooden teeth and the horns, many variants of which are documented for Idoma masks. The hairstyle, the horns, the ears, eyebrows, eyes, nose and mouth are accentuated in black. A typical Idoma mask with minor age-related damage (colour abrasion and 2 small cracks on the back rim), one old original repair (crack on the right horn, glued) as well as a visibly good, old usage patina (see smooth areas on the inside and outside). Height: 27 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)

Austrian Collection.
