Cameroon Grassfields, Kingdom of Bamum: a beautiful, old bangle made of ivory.
A large bangle evidently made from very old ivory, created in a shape typical of the Grassfields of Cameroon (North West Cameroon) and especially characteristic of jewellery from the old Kingdom of Bamum: thick, heavy and strongly curving outwards. The ivory from which the bangle is made clearly shows visible signs of its age: with a strong, honey-coloured patina on the outside (ivory naturally darkens with time) and with a dark brown patina on the inside through protracted use, as well as a beautiful, old craquelure along both edges. A magnificent, large and old piece. Excellent patina and traces of usage. No damage. Diameter: 6 cm to 6.2 cm (on the inside); 10.5 cm (on the outside). Around 1900. (ME) ASA
Provenance:
According to information of the consignor, purchased in 1985 in Fumban, the former capital city of the Kingdom of Bamum; now: Austria private collection.
