Josef Hoffmann, A girandole with eight branches, - Jugendstil and 20th Century Arts and Crafts

Designed in 1924, executed by the Wiener Werkstätte, hammered silver, the foot hallmarked with monogram JH, three-line Wiener Werkstätte logotype, hoopoe mark, 900 and Made in Austria within a rectangle, sconces hallmarked with toucan’s head and monogram WW, height 20.5 cm, (B).

Lit.: The preparatory sketch for the girandole is located in the WW Archive at the Austrian Museum of Applied Arts (ÖMAK), Vienna with inventory no. KI 12124/17, work no. S de 39. According to the documentation available, 61 specimens exist. Further see the magazines The studio - Yearbook of decorative art, London 1926, p. 168, ill. 1 and Die Kunst 60/1929, ill. p. 296.
