Gerhard Richter *

(born in Dresden in 1932)
Strip, 2011, on the reverse inscribed, signed, dated Richter 2011 “Probedruck für Strip 512/4096”, digital inkjet print on cardboard, mounted on white aluminium Dibond plate, image size 32 x 92 cm, overall size 53.2 x 105.2 cm, printed by Printmanagement Plitt, Oberhausen, framed, (PS)

Certificate: Hubertus Butin, Berlin February 25, 2016
The present original design will be included as a supplement to the catalogue raisonné.

Provenance:
Private Collection, Germany – directly from the artist

Literature:
Hubertus Butin, Stefan Gronert, Thomas Olbricht (ed.), Gerhard Richter, Editionen 1965–2013, Ostfildern 2014, no. 148.

The present proof, signed and inscribed on the reverse in black felt pen, was executed prior to the edition of 72.

“This work was created after an excerpt of the oil painting ‘Abstraktes Bild’ (1990), which has the number 724-4 in the catalogue raisonné of paintings. The motif of the painting was fragmented on the computer into 4,096 vertical segments, which correspond to the height of the picture. The number 512 noted on the reverse of the current print indicates which of these predefined segments was chosen by the artist according to the random principle, in order to be reproduced in countless reflections, until a geometric repeat of long, horizontal stripes resulted from it. Since each one of the 72 examples of the edition is based on another segment, each sheet displays a different chromaticity. Since, within the print run, no example with the number 512 was produced, this present test example is also a unique object, which I will include retroactively in my catalogue raisonné.“
