We are grateful to David Marshall for suggesting the attribution after examining the present painting in the original.
We are also grateful to Riccardo Lattuada for independently confirming the attribution after examination of the painting in the original.
The present painting has been traditionally considered as a work by Viviano Codazzi and Ascanio Luciani was a pupil of Codazzi´s whilst he was resident in Naples between 1634 and 1647-8. Marshall has suggested that the present composition can be dated to the mid-1640’s.
Lattuada has observed that the elegant elongated figures in the present work are similar to those painted by Domenico Gargiulo, and can be found in other works from Luciani´s early production.
