Circle of Bartolomeo Manfredi

Circle of Bartolomeo Manfredi - Old Master Paintings

(Ostiano 1582–1622 Rome)
The Fortune Teller with a Group of Players,
oil on canvas, 139 x 192.5 cm, framed

The present painting derives from a lost composition by Bartolomeo Manfredi, known only through copies. The most important of these compositions was once in the Gemäldegalerie of Dresden but it was destroyed in 1945 (see N. Hartje, Bartolomeo Manfredi (1582-1622): ein Nachfolger Caravaggios und seine europäische Wirkung; Monographie und Werkverzeichnis, Weimar 2004, pp. 370-373, 490, no. B1, fig. 37). Like the Dresden version the present work depicts the entire composition.

A painting of a similar size was offered on the art market in Paris as attributed to Nicolas Tournier (oil on canvas, 132 x 200 cm, Picard Tajan, Nouveau Drouot, Paris, 12-13 June 1986). A further copy, enlarged to a ‘whole figure format’ was offered at Sotheby’s London, 7th December 1994 (lot 104) as a follower of Manfredi. Other paintings depicting only a part of this composition are known and demonstrate the success of the subject.
