In the ‘Lexikon der holländischen Stilllebenmaler im 17. Jahrhundert’, one can read on Sorgh: ‘The painter’s market scenes reveal the meticulousness with which he rendered baskets and other containers and, above all, various types of vegetables. Apart from his devotion to detail, his still lifes set in peasant interiors show the painter’s interest in a diversified spatial arrangement of objects. In such compositions, the artist uses light and shadow as polar opposites. Whereas household effects are carefully described in a brightly lit area, the surroundings recede in a diffused half inshadow pictorial space.’ The painting is accompanied by a written report by Walther Bernt (1972).
