In 1551, the year when he had returned from Italy, Hendrick van Cleve became a master at the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke. Little is known about his work. His oeuvre comprises topographical landscapes, views of Rome and the Vatican, and numerous depictions of the Tower of Babel. The present painting is dominated by a monumental statue of Saturn, the God of Time, which stands on a tall pedestal next to a blacksmith. An imaginary landscape with a fantastic view of a town extends in the background.
