Bonifacio de’ Pitati and Workshop
(Verona 1487–1553 Venice)
Holy Family with Saint John the Baptist and Saint Catherine,
oil on canvas, 103 x 129.5 cm, framed
We are grateful to Bernard Aikema for confirming the attribution of the present lot after examining the painting in the original.
Peter Humfrey dates the present painting in the 1540s, and states that at this stage of his artistic production Bonifacio executed virtually everything in collaboration with his workshop.
The Holy Family with the Child, Baptist and Saint Catherine of Alexandria is portrayed with warm hues and vivid lighting and the figure of Saint Catherine can be compared to the Madonna in the Rest of the Flight into Egypt in the Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide (inv. 0.1376).
The present composition is characteristic for the private devotional pictures that the artist painted towards the end of his career. Stylistically they recall Venetian masters such as Giorgione, whose style is reflected in the tonal quality and the figures quiet introspection. There are also traits of the work of Giovanni Bellini in the work’s symmetry and background. The panoramic landscape is typical of Bonifacio’s œuvre.
