Lot No. 1326

Edmund Adler *

(Vienna 1876–1965 Mannersdorf)
The Little Darling, signed Edmund Adler, oil on canvas, 56 x 66 cm, framed, (Rei)

Edmund Adler‘s daughter Rosa taught piano to many of the children in Mannersdorf, presenting the artist with a large repertoire of models from which to choose. The childrens‘ reward for sitting as models for the artist was a jam sandwich. He photographed the children for the group pictures using a plate camera, even developing the photographs himself. These were followed by pencil studies, many of which can be found in the Edmund Adler Museum in Mannersdorf. (Cf. Barbara Kremser, Edmund Adler 1876-1965, Leben und Werk, Mannersdorf 2000, p.24,25 and 35). Many of his oil painting vary only in a few details. For example, a version of this work appeared on the art market in 2007 in which the scene was set not in a room, but in a barn with rabbits.

The present work will be included in the Edmund Adler archive by Barbara Hagerty, Vienna.
