A large group ‘Apollo and Python’ for Tsarina Catherine II, - Works of Art (Furniture, Sculptures, Glass, Porcelain)

Apollo was the triumphant victor in a battle with the dragon, Python as well as conquering the personification of jealousy, both lie dead at his feet, in his left hand he holds a golden bow, behind the tree is his quiver, to one side stands a small genius, holding a laurel wreath and a palm of peace above Apollo, to the left sits Minerva as the goddess of strategic warfare, wearing helmet and armour, she holds a spear in her right hand and an olive branch in her left, to one side, an owl suggests that the artist identifies her with Pallas Athene, porcelain, polychrome and gilt group, rocky base covered in leaves, curved stepped base with fine and wide gilt rims, gilt borders and rosettes, height 38 cm, length 36 cm, staff replaced, some restoration, Meissen, underglaze blue sword mark, mid-19th cent., model no. 32, former no. 137, gilt painter no. 20, model by J. J. Kändler March/May 1774 (Ru)
