porcelain, burnished gilt body, angular handles with foliate terminals, rim of aperture with brightly painted border of flowers, mint green rims and fine gilt foliate frieze in relief, to one side, green-painted vine tendrils on hooks painted en grisaille, lower body and spherical foot with acanthus leaf wreath with chickweed flowers painted en grisaille, rim to foot with gilt beads, to obverse and reverse, octagonal reserves framed by palmette friezes in relief, within which polychrome-painted landscapes, 1st vase, to the obverse 3 Baccantes, their left hands holding thyrsi, tambourines in their right hands, the kneeling figure to the centre adorned with garland of flowers, at her feet lies a triangle, to one side a gilt jug with garland of flowers and blue bands, to the reverse, monument with Venus and Cupid, to one side, fire pit and virgin with votive dish gazing towards Venus, a jug of water before her, 2nd vase, to the obverse, ‘The Youth of Bacchus’, he is lying between 2 Baccantes, reaching towards black grapes with his foot resting on a jug, to one side, vine with black grapes, to the reverse, Bacchante, holding a mask in her right hand and embracing the small Bacchus, who is dancing and holding a thyrsus in his hands, to his feet, a tambourine, to one side, a lightly shrouded Roman genius sits with a sword in his left hand, his right foot leaning on a helmet, height 23.5 cm, some restoration to rim of aperture, 2 copper inlays with rings for flowers, Vienna, Imperial Manufactory, underglaze blue shield mark, date mark 1798, turner no. 4 Anton Kammerer 1786-1833, no. 12 Franz Schwaiger 1785-1804 (Ru)

Lit.: Verrückt nach Angelika Kauffmann, Hetjens-Museum Düsseldorf 1999, p. 35, ill. 12, Angelika Kauffmann painted the image of the Bacchantes for Charles Boddam. The genius with the triangle has been interpreted as ‘Euphrosyne’, an allegory of cheerfulness; p. 44 ill. 19, ‘The Youth of Bacchus’ – this may be based on a work by Robert Thew, who executed an engraving in 1789 after a painting by Angelika Kauffmann, owned by Robert Sayer. The corresponding print is held by the Albertina in Vienna, its original title being ‘The Nursing of Bacchus’;
