David, the first true king of Israel-Juda, circa 1000-970 BCE, and founder of the Jewish dynasty. He built a palace on Mount Zion, the city of David, fortified and expanded it. He brought the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem and proclaimed Salomo, the talented son of his mistress, Bathsheba, as his heir. His final resting place is in the royal tombs of Zion. Despite his weaknesses and mistakes, he became known to posterity as the ‘man with the heart of God’. His image became the prototype of the Messiah for Jews and Christians.
