Vienna circa 1830/35. Made mostly in beech with figured maple veneer, also with marquetry ornament in mahogany. The ensemble comprises: 6 chairs of serpentine form with later upholstery on the seats and backrest, also a rectangular table with stretcher, the support of the top altered, 76 x 126 x 62 cm. In cared-for condition with minor ageing and wear. (MIN)
In 1832 an identical chair was located in the antechamber of Empress Carolina Augusta, wife of Emperor Franz I of Austria at the Hofburg. At the Vienna museum (1., Karlsplatz) there is a watercolour of a salon circa 1830 painted by Johann Stephan Decker, in which the same type of chair can be seen (upholstered in blue).
