Ninghsia, - Oriental Carpets, Textiles and Tapestries

West China, c. 386 x 280 cm, about 1800 or early 19th century, the design of the present important hand knotted carpet, depicting Lamaist priests in the act of blowing conch shells, echoes that of narrow pillar carpets and the present piece is probably unique in its current format, the grotesques at the upper end represent "Jiao Tu", one of the nine sons of the dragon, despite its age in excellent condition with minor damage to the pile, entirely mounted on linen.
