chased brass, partly hammered, patinated, old wooden frame; depictions and forms with varying reliefs, inter alia of a bird; with beading; upper right with monogram EM; 78.5 x 64.5 cm. Josef Hoffmann was professor and artistic director of the department for decorative metalworks (Abteilung Gürtlerei und Metallarbeiten) at the Kunstgewerbeschule des Österreichischen Museums für Kunst und Industrie, Vienna. Eugen Mayer worked there as an assistant in 1922-23. From 1923 onwards he was technical director of the workshop for decorative metalworks (Werktstatt für Gürtlerei), and professor until 1946. (MP)
