Josef Wopfner

Josef Wopfner - 19th Century Paintings and Watercolours

(Schwaz 1843-1927 Munich)
Fishermen setting out to sea, signed, dated, inscribed Jos. Wopfner Munich 1886, oil on panel, 30 x 44 cm, cradled, framed, (Rei)

In 1860, Joseph Wopfner moved to Munich, where he initially worked as a lithographer. Between 1869 and 1872 he studied with Karl Theodor von Piloty. He also elaborated the impulses derived from the landscape painter Eduard Schleich the Elder, which would prove vital for Wopfner’s Chiemsee paintings. He belonged to the artists’ group around Karl Raupp, the founder of the art colony in Frauenwörth. He received the title of professor in 1888. Like K. Raupp, J. Wopfner’s themes centre on Lake Chiemsee, alternating simple landscape images and dramatic depictions of fishermen. On the basis of accurate, open-air studies of nature, he created landscape paintings that develop the Biedermeier tradition in the direction of Impressionism.
