LE CANTIQUE DES CANTIQUES QUI EST SUR SALOMON, 1905, Paris: Librairie Universelle, 33 Rue de Provence, 1905, 6 original wood engravings by František Kupka
Scope: 84 pages, The dimensions: 40.2 x 29.5 cm (ML)
Condition: semi-leather, the binding is slightly frayed. The book is in good condition.
There are a number of preparatory sketches, drawings and graphics for the first Kupka's bibliophile Song of songs (a collection of wedding Jewish songs from different times). Both the text and the illustrations correspond to the conventions of the time, however, Kupka's work is considered to be the reform of the French book. He completely discarded the then naturalist form of the books and turned back to the 18th century and also make use of the Art Nouveau ornament. Kupka carefully prepared for the illustrations, he studied the Old Testament realities and learned Hebrew. Before he reached the final solution of the book, he tried many other possibilities.
