Prince Eugene of Savoy-Carignan, - Glass and porcelain

(Paris 1663-1736 Vienna), Austrian general and statesman, An equestrian monument with base, porcelain, polychromed and gilt, the base with 2 reserves, moulded view of Belvedere Palace and fleeing Turk, in the background the city of Vienna, flanked by the Imperial and Austrian coats-of-arms, 8 volute feet, overall height: 38 cm, Augarten, Vienna, underglaze blue mark ca. 1960, model no. 1731 by Karin and Viktor Sakellarios 1927, painter no. 203 (Ru)

Prince Eugene, son of a French aristocrat, was destined for a career in the clergy but ran away to Vienna in 1683. Having joined the Imperial Army, he took part in the Great Turkish War 1683-1699, from 1697 as commander in chief. Some successful engagements incl.: Battle of Kahlenberg 1683, Budapest 1686, Senta 1697, War of Spanish Succession 1701-1713/14, Höchstädt a. d. Donau 1704, Turin 1709, Turkish War 1714-1716 in Belgrade. Eugene was considered the ablest commander of his age and, as a politician, placed the interests of the state above dynastic considerations.
