Joseph Bergler, chamber painter to the prince-bishop of Passau, painted numerous altarpieces for churches in Lower Bavaria and in the Bavarian Forest. He worked as a teacher from 1800 on and later became the director of the newly founded Academy of Fine Arts in Prague.
