The subject refers to an episode in the Gesta Romanorum, a collection of tales about a king who fathered three sons, all of whom raised claims to the throne after his death. At the advice of a wise councillor, the king’s legitimate son and heir was to be identified in a test of who of the three would shoot at their dead father’s body.
