Cast bronze. Flattened, spherical body with high cylindrical neck on everted foot with two lobed hollow handles. To the neck, two chi dragons in high relief, to the body four taotie masks in relief, interspersed with four flanges. Height: 34.4 cm. (BA)

Arrow vases were used for the game of taohu, in which arrows were thrown by hand into the three apertures, as documented in the Book of Rites (Liji) (see Hugh Moss and Gerard Tsang, Arts from the Scholar's Studio, Hong Kong 1986, cat. no. 264).
