A Chinese couch bed with figural group en miniature, China, Qing dynasty
Carved ivory, comprised of several elements. A four-legged couch (luohan chuang) on a rectangular base, mounted on a wooden board, with a large area for sitting or lying, with back and armrests to three sides. Couches like this were integral to the scholar’s study, providing space to lay out books and artworks, or functioning as somewhere to study or to lay down to rest. On the couch, there is a tray with a box, a stand for bananas, and other utensils. A servant stands on the couch, busying herself with a pot, using a rod and chopsticks. To the edge sits a woman who is probably the lady of the house, playing with her small son. In front of the couch lies a man with a pigtail, his shoes placed before him, looking up at the woman and child. Damaged, partly restored, losses and cracks.
