Lot No. 38 +

A figure of Guanyin, China, Ming dynasty, 17th cent.

A figure of Guanyin, China, Ming dynasty, 17th cent. - Asian art

Parcel-gilt, hollow-cast bronze. The Bodhisattva of Infinite Compassion seated in padmasana, his gaze lowered in meditation, in his right hand a twig, in his left a cup, presumably an iconographical variant on ‘Guanyin with willow branch’ (and vase of nectar). To his crown, an image of the Buddha Amitabha. Some corrosion and traces of wear, minor casting defects. Height: 32.5 cm. (BA)

Provenance:
collection of Dr Robert Spira (1888-1967), Graz; 5.8.1938 seized by the Gestapo; 20.2.1939; deposited with Landesmuseum Joanneum for safe-keeping (inv. no. 2264); 16.10.2014 determination of the Styrian state government that it should be restituted. Since, in this case, no legal heirs could be found, in accordance with the determination made by the Styrian state government, and in line with the Provincial Constitutional Law on the restitution of questionable acquisitions seized from their owners during the National Socialist tyranny, the object was marked for sale, the proceeds of which to go to the benefit of victims of National Socialism, or an appropriate organisation.

局部鎏金观音菩萨像中国,明朝,17世纪, 观音菩萨持柳枝和杯子,雕像局部腐蚀,
带铸造瑕疵。
