Two figures of Buddhist monks or luohan. China, Ming dynasty, 17th cent. - Asian art

a) Gilt bronze. Standing figure with finely cast facial features, his hands placed one on top of the other in an esoteric mudra. Calves and feet missing. Traces of wear. Height: 15 cm.
b) Bronze with dark patina. Presumed to be a representation of Ananda, a favourite pupil of Buddha. He stands on a lotus flower base, his palms pressed together in front of his chest in a gesture of veneration. Slightly damaged. Height: 19.2 cm. (BA)

Provenance:
collection of Dr Robert Spira (1888-1967), Graz; 5.8.1938 seized by the Gestapo; 20.2.1939; deposited with Landesmuseum Joanneum for safe-keeping (inv. nos 2255 and 2256); 16.10.2014 determination of the Styrian state government that they should be restituted. Since, in this case, no legal heirs could be found, in accordance with the determination made by the Styrian state government, and in line with the Provincial Constitutional Law on the restitution of questionable acquisitions seized from their owners during the National Socialist tyranny, the objects were marked for sale, the proceeds of which should go to the benefit of victims of National Socialism or an appropriate organisation. Inv. nos 2255 and 2256.

a) 鎏金铜像,脸部铸工精细,站立双手结神秘手印,小腿和脚断掉,镀金层局部磨损 b) 带深色铜绿, 莲花座上也许是阿南陀双手合十,轻微损坏。
