A painted image of Doumu, China, Qing dynasty, 19th cent.

A painted image of Doumu, China, Qing dynasty, 19th cent. - Asian art

A hanging scroll with an image of the Daoist star goddess, Doumu, which is probably based on representations of the Buddhist goddess, Marici. Doumu drives a chariot pulled by pigs, and holds, amongst other things, the sun and moon, a bow and arrow, and a seal in eight of her ten hands. She is surrounded by four acolytes; below her are her nine children, the seven stars of the Plough constellation (Ursa major), and two other stellar divinities of the northern sky. To the foreground, the ‘bridge that erases the consequences of bad karma’ with two believers, who are beseeching the Daoist god, Zhenwu and the god of thunder, standing behind him, to be allowed to cross the bridge. The evils of bad karma, such as illnesses, are named in the cartouches. The birth of the nine stars was celebrated annually by believers, and it may be that such images were used on these occasions. Ink and colours on paper. Tears and parts missing; recently remounted. 126.5 x 66 cm. (BA)
