A votive stupa and ghanta. Tibet, 19th cent. or earlier
a) This bell-shaped type of stupa, which can be traced back to the Pala era in north-eastern India, was disseminated throughout Tibet in the 11th and 12th centuries by the Kadam Order, thus being also known as a Kadam stupa. Votive stupas of this kind may contain reliquaries, for instance, and were set on altars in monasteries in remembrance of a deceased person. Bronze, sealed. Height: 13 cm.
b) Together with the vajra, the ritual bell, the ghanta, was the most important ritual instrument in Tibetan Buddhism, symbolising wisdom. The bodies of the bells in silvered metal, handles in brass. Height: 15 cm. (BA)
