A small figure of Padmasambhava, Bhutan, 19th/early 20th cent.
Silver, parcel-gilt. The tantric master, who was supposed to have been one of the people who established Buddhism in Tibet in the 8th century, is depicted seated in a lotus position on a lotus throne in his best-known form as Guru Rinpoche, wearing a ‘lotus hat’ adorned with an eagle’s feather, and the sun and moon, in his left hand a skull cup, in his right the vajra, and in the crook of his arm, a skull rod. Throne sealed. Traces of wear. Height: 5 cm, weight: 47.2 g. (BA)
