A mottled red sandstone fragment depicting a ‘yakshi’. India, Mathura, 2nd/3rd cent. - Asian art

Carved in high relief, the figure of a yakshi, symbol of fertility and abundance, stands naked except for a belt around her hips, wearing large earrings, a necklace and bracelets, with wide hips and full breasts in an elegant tribhanga pose under a tree. She reaches up to a branch over her head with her left hand, her right placed on her hip. Her head inclines towards the right, her sweet face with small, full lips, a small, well-rounded chin and widely set eyebrows. Some insignificant chips and losses. Mounted on a metal base. Height: 45 cm; width: 20 cm. (BA)
