Venetian Bible created in Venice by Petr Liechtenstein, native of Cologne, Germany (1501-1585), because Prague book printing in the early 16th century was still unable to complete demanding orders. This book was long considered to be the first Czech printed bible, although the publishers (Jan Hlavsa, Václav Sova of Liboslava, Burian Lazar) explicitly noted on the reverse of the title page that they are following up on the Prague Bible (1488) and Kutná Hora Bible (1489). Both previous bibles (Prague and Kutna Hora) were references for the Venetian Bible both in terms of text and type. The order of biblical books from the Venetian Bible was then adopted to all later Czech bibles ... and Catholic ones until the end of the 18th century, which were based on the Venetian Bible. For the first time, this bible included the apocryphal 4th Book of Ezra.
Literature: Graessse I. 371, Jungmann; 1849: Jungmann III. 538, Book List No 01097 and Book List - Addenda No 1097.
Condition: the original pressed binding was replaced with a newer leather spine in the past. Missing brass clasps, the binding is torn and slightly damaged. The title page is cropped and has fallen out of the binding, as has the first page of the foreword. The specimen is not complete as two pages of the foreword and four pages of text are missing.
