silver, of oval form, edged with bands of leaves, ornamental band with grape- and grapeleaf décor, applied with the large coat-of-arms of Count Pozzo di Borgo, finial with leaf décor, salver can be filled with hot water, four claw feet, two handles, 55 x 34 cm, height: 28 cm, weight: 6761 g, maker’s mark JBCO = Jean Baptiste Claude Odiot, Paris warranty stamp 1819-1838, (Lu)
A splendid large table bell with salver, from the famed service of Count Pozzo di Borgo. Graf Carlo Andrea Pozzo di Borgo (1764-1842), of Corsican descent, was very close to Napoleon and Joseph Bonaparte in his youth. Following political differences he entered the service of Tsar Alexander I. in 1804 and in 1805 became the liaison officer with the British. In 1806, he joined the Prussian Army. When the alliance with Napoleon came to an end in 1812, he returned to Russia and when the allies entered Paris in 1814 he was appointed commissary general of the provisional government. Russian ambassador in Paris from 1815-1834, and posted to London 1835, he returned to Paris in 1839 where he died in 1842.
