Mixed lot (3 items): Indonesia, Java: Three shadow puppets of the type ‘wayang kulit,’ cut out of cowhide and painted.
1: A Javanese ‘wayang kulit’ shadow puppet, cut out of leather, and painted gold, red and black. It represents a noble prince. A few minimal, age-related tears have been mended with original repairs (sewn). Good, old usage patina on the holding and guiding sticks. H: c. 75 cm.
2: A ‘wayang kulit’ figure cut out of leather, and painted black, red and gold. With a black ponytail out of horse hair on his head. The holding and guiding sticks are cut out of horn. The figure represents ‘Semar’, the small, fat jester in Javanese shadow theatre. H: c. 60 cm, W: c. 30 cm.
3: A ‘wayang kulit’ shadow puppet, representing a wild boar. The wild boar is cut out of leather, and painted black, red and white. The simple holding stick is made of wood, painted black. H: 48 cm (with stick), W: 50 cm. All 3 shadow puppets: First half of the 20th century. (ME)
