Afghanistan, Tekke Turkmens: An old Koran holder made of leather with silver-gilt plates; nicely decorated with silver rivets and 14 carnelian stones. - Tribal Art

A smaller Koran or amulet holder with an attached carrying strap, as worn among the Tekke Turkmens of northern Afghanistan by old women (see cat. no. 156). The decorative silver plate at the holder’s front side has engraved the characteristic, curvy floral/tendril motifs of the Tekke Turkmens. It is double framed by bars made of silver wire and features nine carnelians individually set in silver. With the spaces between the engravings — ‘fire-gilded’ (see cat. no. 151). Attached to the leather strap are five smaller, rectangular silver plates. They, too, are engraved, fire-gilded and framed in silver. A round cabochon carnelian stone is set centrally in each of these five smaller silver plates. Above, below and in-between these 5 small silver plates, round and rectangular, flattened silver rivets are placed in the strap. One of these decorative rivets is missing (at the bottom, to the right). No other age-related damage. A piece with visibly good patina as a result of protracted use. H: 12.5 cm, W: 14,5 cm (holder alone), L: 56 cm (holder with strap). Between the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. (ME)

Provenance: German Private Collection.

Lit.: See cat. no. 156.
