Afghanistan, Tekke Turkmens: A silver necklace with a silver-gilt pendant with five embedded carnelians. The chain has beads made of silver, red coral and wood.
A necklace characteristic of the forms and workmanship of the Tekke Turkmens of North Afghanistan. With a pendant made from a single silver plate. Above — a stylised, curvilinear ram’s head presented in openwork. Below — a triangle featuring characteristic Tekke engravings. Lastly, hanging underneath from eyelets and rings — nine ‘tongues’ with eleven silver pendants. The pendant overall is structured and framed by soldered-on bars made of silver wire. Its upper part is silver-gilt, from the two lanceolate side pendants to the lower eyelets (see cat. no. 151) and has embedded in it five carnelians with flat as well as with domed cabochon finishes. The chain is a string of silver beads, two big silver double-beads, pierced pieces of red coral, coral beads, and wooden brown beads. A lovely jewel, undamaged. H: 15 cm, W: 9 cm (pendant only), L: 59 cm (with the chain and the small pendants). Between the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. (ME)
