Persia (Iran): A magnificent, round parade shield made of iron, with script medallions and fine silver and brass damascening.

Persia (Iran): A magnificent, round parade shield made of iron, with script medallions and fine silver and brass damascening. - Tribal Art

A bulging, iron parade shield from Persia, with countless cut out and engraved cartouches and round medallions with Arabic symbols. The script has been emphasised in dark (possibly with Niello) as well as highlighted with inlaid shiny silver thread. The edges of the medallions in the central rounded area, as well as the free spandrel spaces, have been gently inlaid with glistening yellow brass. All cut, engraved and damascened decorative motifs on this parade shield, the rounded central area and the encircling bands, consist of different leaf-and-blossom floral tendrils. Four small, semi-spherical, rosette-footed iron shield-bosses are to be found on the front of this round iron shield, each reinforced by all-round riveted brass bands. The back, painted black, shows rust stains. The four iron eyelets for the carrying straps are intact, although the straps themselves are missing. Apart from this, the present Persian luxurious shield displays no damage. Diameter: c. 48 cm. 19th century or earlier. (ME)
