Lot No. 149

Afghanistan, Herat province: A necklace with silver amulet holds with inscriptions.

Afghanistan, Herat province: A necklace with silver amulet holds with inscriptions. - Tribal Art

A protective amulet necklace from western Afghanistan (Herat area). With three elongated amulet capsules inside which, originally, handwritten verses from the Koran or other paper amulets would have been placed. All three holds open to one side and each is strung through three eyelets. The lower, middle hold is hexagonal, cast in silver, and the Arabic inscriptions (sacred charms and blessings) are engraved and hallmarked. The two outer holds on the amulet necklace have been cut from silver sheet — accommodating each eight inscriptions in the Arabic script. These are chased, much like the dotted lines and decorations on the side covers. All three holds are strung on a plaited white silk cord. The braided silk cord has a knot decoratively wrapped in shiny metal thread. L: 8.3 cm, diameter: 1 cm (the hold in the middle), 6.7 cm each, diameter 1.8 cm (the two outer holds), L: 34 cm (the entire necklace). Between the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. (ME)

Provenance: German Private Collection.

Lit.: 'Schmuck aus dem Herzen der Seidenstraße' by Johannes Kalter (Hoffmann Collection), ill. 156, 157, 158.
