With four rods, such as the present one, used as ‘feet’, Mauritanian nomads in western Sahara, southern Morocco and Mauritania build simple shelves or containers to store everyday objects (such as clothes, kitchen utensils, calabashes, etc.) all together in, or near, their tents, but also in order to transport such objects on camels or donkeys.
The present rod is carved from very hard, heavy wood. The facing side of the large middle section is richly carved with extremely fine, typical, abstract-geometric patterns in relief. H: 87 cm; W: 18.5 cm.

Provenance: According to information supplied by the consignor, purchased in southern Morocco; Viennese Private Collection.
