Mixed lot (2 items): Zulu, South Africa: two so-called ‘Knobkerrie clubs’.
‘Knobkerrie clubs’ are used in South Africa by ethnicities like the Zulu, Xhosa, Ndebele and others. In peaceful times, these are implements of work used by cowherds or serving as a walking cane. In times of war, however, the ‘Knobkerries’ were effective strike and projectile weapons. Carved from very hard wood, they have a heavy rounded club-head, a thin long shaft (circular in cross section) and are overall polished to a shiny smoothness. Underneath the ball of one of the Zulu ‘Knobkerrie clubs’ presented here is a delicately plaited decorative cuff made of copper wire. All in all, these are two perfect old objects with patina and traces of usage (small dents and minor cracks on both of the heads). H: 72 cm and 70.5 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)
