A small ‘Lukwakongo mask’, also known as ‘Kapapa’ used as identity card by members of the Lega’s Bwami Society (see cat. no. 104 for a more precise explanation). Carved from hard wood in the typical style of the Lega. Gracing the forehead are cut zigzag patterns. The face, with traces of white kaolin on it, is heart-shaped, inwardly cupped, with a long, straight nose, slitted eyes and mouth. Fastened underneath by means of openings on each side is a beard made from the fibres of the ‘Likusa liana’. Good usage patina, no damage. H: 11 cm, W: 6.3 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)
