Amongst the Yaka, in southwest Congo, the leaders of the hunt use such pipes during hunting, in order to communicate with other hunters and in order to call their dogs. The present Yaka pipe, carved out of hard wood, is coloured reddish-brown with a black hairstyle; it has a head of typical Yaka style. It has a high crested coiffure, protruding ears, large nose, and an open mouth. This head portrays a ‘protective spirit’ and increases the luck of the hunter. An unusual, carefully crafted piece, with good shiny patina and a necklace of coloured, small glass beads. One small break on the head at the back. Otherwise no damage. H: 15 cm. First half to mid-20th century. (ME)
Provenance: Belgian Collection.
Lit.: 'Yaka' by Arthur P. Bourgeois, fig. 6.
