Fali, Kirdi, Kapsiki, northern Cameroon: An iron dance axe representing a rooster.
A dance axe, forged from old, African iron. The hilt is wrapped with plaited leather straps. A conical, iron pommel constitutes the lower termination. Dance axes of this type are present in certain tribes in the mountainous regions of northern Cameroon (Fali, Kirdi, Bana, Kapsiki). The blunt blade with the long projection is intended to represent a rooster, viewed as ‘sacred’ by the Fali. Between c. 1900 and the first third of the 20th century; H: 42 cm. (ME)
