Baule, Ivory Coast: A prestige or honorific staff with a head as a handle grip.

Baule, Ivory Coast: A prestige or honorific staff with a head as a handle grip. - Tribal Art

Rod of a dignitary, made of light-coloured wood in a single piece. The grip is carved in the form of a head in typical Baule style. With finely lined hairstyle, wide eyebrow arches above drooping eyelids and a sunken glance. With scarification marks on both temples, as well as with an open mouth. Beneath the head is carved an octagonal piece with alternating, geometric chip-carving ornament. Below this follow eight ‘lentils’, shown crosswise (in the form of seed pods of the bread-fruit tree?) down to the lower, pointed end of the rod. Carved from a single piece. A prestige or honorific staff with some old cracks and a fine, ‘soft’ worn patina as a result of protracted use. L: 86 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)
