A fine portrait mask of the Baule people, called ‘Mblo’ or ‘Ndoma mask’. For a more detailed explanation see cat. no. 36. The mask is carved from hard, light-coloured wood and coloured black and brown on the front side. It has a carefully worked coiffure with a main crest above, and two plaits alongside the face below. With typical tribal scarification marks on the forehead, on both temples and at the corners of the mouth. Below the protruding eyebrow arches are the slitted and outlined eyes. The short, round shaped goatee terminates in a thick ‘button’. A piece with old, shiny usage patina on front and back (inside). Light colour scuffing and minimal, slight cracks on the front. Otherwise, no appreciable damage. H: 33 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)
