A female mask of the ‘portrait mask’ type (for a more detailed explanation see cat. no. 36). Carved out of light-coloured wood and coloured reddish-dark brown. With a high coiffure of fine lines, which on the rear side is hollowed. On the right side the mask has a plait, on its left side a semi-circular bun. The face is formed in typical Baule style (with scarification marks, eyebrow arches etc.). Only the eyes are carved here as simple slits. The double serrated beard which runs around the lower part of the mask does not represent, for the Baule, a male beard, but rather is viewed as a decorative element. The beard does not indicate whether the portrait mask is male or female. In this instance, however, it is female (due to the elaborate hairstyle). An old piece with good shiny usage patina on the front and back, as well as a (used) bite bar for the mask dancer, on the inner surface of the rear side. No damage. H: 27 cm; W: 15 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)
Provenance: Belgian Collection.
Lit.: 'Baule. African Art - Western Eyes' by Susan M. Vogel, fig. p. 27, 95, 143.
